The hallway is that transition place between chapters in our lives. This article gives 5 suggestions on how to use the time intentionally.
This week, I spoke with several professionals navigating unexpected layoffs. In one conversation, I shared a poem I wrote 30 years ago about “the hallway” – that space between what was and what’s next.
When you’re suddenly pushed into the hallway, emotions flood in: FOMO, shame, anger, loneliness, uncertainty. The hallway feels stark, empty, uninviting. Yet within this same space lies opportunity – for quietness, clarity, and reflection. As you venture forward, you discover doors you never noticed before. Each one represents a possibility to explore, consider, or embrace.
The hallway, though initially daunting, is the only path to your next chapter. Some of you are already discovering that this unexpected push was the catalyst needed for positive change.
For those currently in the hallway, consider these steps:
1. Pause. Breathe. Rest. Trust that you’ll find your way. You got this!
2. Reflect on your previous role – what energized you? What drained you? What ignites your passion?
3. Envision your ideal next chapter. Take time to clarify what YOU truly want before rushing into the next opportunity. Don’t run from something, run TO something!
4. Be intentional with this transition period. Whether it’s 30, 60, or 180 days, this is a rare gift of time. Use it meaningfully for yourself and those closest to you.
5. Think boldly about your future. As John Piper said, “We don’t waste our life WHERE we work, but how and why we work.” Focus less on the destination and more on the purpose and impact you seek.
My life philosophy centers on the Hebrew word “Avodah” – the integration of work, purpose, and service. We’re created to work, but work isn’t just what we do—it’s how we create meaning and serve others. Let this guide your next chapter, and you may find yourself in an even better place than before.
Remember, if you want a window view, you have to keep walking and eventually open the next door and go in!
